Samsung – The Rumours Ring True

by on August 28, 2013

After months of speculation Samsung has confirmed its plans to unveil its next generation Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear smartwatch on 4 September, ahead of the European consumer electronics show, IFA 2013.

Both devices have been hotly rumoured for quite some time, and once again the Korean manufacturer hasn’t let us down. Samsung certainly has a knack of producing the goods that are whispered about long before they become a reality.

So what other Samsung-based hype has the rumour mill been churning up? We take a look at the speculated happenings of late to see whether the whispers are merely second-guesses, or if they are in fact strategically placed snippets from Samsung itself.

Galaxy Note 3: Ultra HD video?

The upcoming Galaxy Note 3 is said to house a 5.9-inch Super AMOLED display and a 1.9GHz quad-core processor, with an unprecedented 3GB of RAM. There is also said to be 16GB of internal storage and Android 4.2.2 on hand.

The latest rumour however suggests the inclusion of Ultra HD video recording capabilities, thanks to a possible 4K camera.

The term 4K Ultra HD stems from the horizontal resolution being nearly 4000 pixels, making it the next step up from 1080p Full HD. An industry insider claims that the ‘phablet’ will be able to record in 200 million pixel resolution.

Galaxy S5: 16 megapixel camera?

Previous Galaxy devices are still popular thanks to the range of cheap mobile contracts that are available. The latest Samsung Galaxy S4 model is only a few months old, but there is already speculation surrounding its successor, the Galaxy S5.

According to South Korean site Electronic Times, a report has emerged that the firm is working on a new 16 megapixel lens with Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) for its future smartphones.

The report also claims that the Galaxy S5, which could come to the fore in March next year, will sport the brand new camera, which would match the lens seen on the S4 Zoom and better the S4’s 13 megapixel offering.

Galaxy Handsets: BBM?

It has already been confirmed that BlackBerry’s free instant messaging service will be making its way to iOS and Android devices, and rumours are rife that Samsung is looking to be first in line to house the arrival on its range of Galaxy handsets.

A video, believed to be posted by Samsung Ghana, gives little away but appears to confirm that BBM will be available on the firm’s Android hardware thanks to the tag line “coming soon to Galaxy smartphones”.

BlackBerry’s decision to launch BBM on rival platforms has raised a few eyebrows amongst industry watchers as the service is one of the unique selling points of its devices.

There are also questions as to why Samsung would want to promote a rival to its ChatON service, which is the Korean manufacturer’s cross-platform method to allow users to communicate with others. However, this could be another step in Samsung’s domination plans as it looks to further extend its reach and capitalise on the mass BBM market.

It is speculated that BBM will be part of Samsung’s Messaging Hub on its smartphones, and will also be available as a download through the Google Play store.

Earlier this month, BlackBerry and Samsung announced plans to push BBM in Africa, and the video leaked by Samsung Ghana is evidence that the project could soon be underway.

Verdict

It’s hard to say whether this latest wave of rumours will ring true, but as previously demonstrated with the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear smartwatch, the Korean manufacturer has a tendency to deliver on these speculative promises.

With this in mind, some industry watchers may argue that Samsung plays a bigger part than it lets on when it comes to fuelling the rumour mill.  Doing so would mean that when it does deliver  it stands out not only for its technical prowess but as a brand that people can trust to provide them with the latest mobile technology.
