iphone 4s Review

by on March 24, 2012

The iPhone 4S caught many by surprise, with Apple expected to release the iPhone 5 – but instead we got an iPhone 4 with overhauled innards.

The outer structure is the same as its old counterpart. With the right side of the phone having no buttons, only a micro SIM slot. The left side of this dual band arial designed phone has the volume controller which also doubles up as the shutter key for the camera and the silencer button is located above it. The top holds the same key as the iphone 4 that is the power/lock button, the headphone jack and extra mic for noise cancellation. Of course the bottom has all the usual panels, the charger dock and the loud speaker grill, but no stereo speakers. There is a 8 megapixel VGA camera at the back. A special mention to the change in the antenna design which has been very tactfully handled after the iphone 4 fiasco. The packaging and the essentials, like charger, USB cable, 3.5mm earphones, and booklet, are the same. To add to them is the SIM eject tool and a few Apple logo. This slim smart phone weighs just a few grams and measures 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm, it is comparatively lighter to hold.

The 3.5 inches, 960 x 640 display screen is one of the most impressive feature of the phone as it has a 326ppi density. With this feature Apple has made one of the highest quality panels for us. The operating system used is the new iOS5 which comes with about 200 new features. The most notable change is the new way of delivering notifications. The notifications can be received both in the lock screen and active screen from a pull down notification center. It also supports widgets like weather and stocks. Twitter and imessage services are also integrated with the iOS5. Using the imessage service gives a complete different experience over normal texting. Dictionary has also been added to the iOS5. Another interesting feature is that if any periodicals are purchased via Apple store it gets stored into the Newsstand application, which can be viewed as a home screen folder.   The 8 mega pixel VGA camera has up to 3264 x 2448 pixels image resolution and LED flash. The up volume key can be used as the shutter key. The high definition video records 1080p clips and stores them in .MOV format. Another up gradation is that the camera application can be accessed from a lock screen. There is also the front VGA camera with video stabilization. The icloud, which is the content management and storage application, can be very helpful for storing music, movies, contact, calendar, etc.   Now lets talk about or to SIRI – the personal virtual digital assistant only and only for the iphone 4S users. This application actually answers the questions asked and also follows instructions. ‘She’ can read the messages and emails, look up a calendar or use navigators to locate a place, take down notes or reminders, make appointment and even remind them, dial up numbers from the contacts, set alarms etc.

This voice recognition service can actually understand the English, German and French languages and if someone dictates a message to be sent, this app can type out the dictation and even send it without us even picking up the phone. This requires a 3g or WiFi connection to run and is of no use when offline.   It has a 1430 mAh lithium-ion battery, which promises to give eight hours of battery life on active 3g connection and 200 hours of standby time. This 140 grams, 16 GB capacity, 512MB RAM comes with a dual core A5 chip. This of course can easily be upgraded to a 32GB or 64GB capacity. It is truly a world phone.
